How to Information Resource Guide

Don't Cell and Drive Print E-mail

How many times have you had to honk at someone that almost hit you or are asleep at the wheel because they were on the phone? It has happened far too many times for me.

Cell phones are not going away anytime soon. Everyone has one, even people that don't need one (like teen age kids, I grew up fine without one.). Like any other freedom given to us there are going to be those that abuse it. The folks I am taking about are the people on the road driving and gabbing on their phone. Let's face it there is no one that is so important that you need to talk to while driving. If you are that important chances are someone else is driving for you.

People need to understand that operating a car takes a level of concentration, especially now that SUVs are so popular. Think about it this is a 7,000-pound chunk of steel moving at over 45 mph on streets and over 70 mph on the freeway. There is very little room for error when you look at the physics of the situation. Yes there is some times when a mother might receive a call from their child at school that needs to come home because they are sick. Unfortunately most of the time the conversion goes more like this,

"Hey how are? I am just driving home and was wondering what you wanted to do later. Oh your busy, well I'll just give so and so a call to see what they're up to. Bye".

Unimportant gab that seems to turn on the "Stupid" button when these folks get behind the wheel.

I don't understand what causes this in people. Can't they walk and chew gum at the same time? If someone is concentrating on their phone call, it leaves little room for concentrating on driving. Some states require you to use a hands free device to talk on your cell phone while driving. This sure seems like a band-aid for the situation. It is not the handling of the phone while driving that impairs a person's judgment, it is the talking!

Pretty soon I hope we start to see cases in court treat accidents caused by a person talking on their phone the same as a drunk driver, maybe then these people will learn to pay attention to the road.
